• What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? Disrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for arbitrary reasons. Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because it is the denial of opportunities and equal rights. Prejudice is thoughs or feelings that are negative towards a whole group of people, but there are no actions behind it. Stereotypes are generalizations of all members of one particular group, and again doesn’t involve any actions just thoughts. Discrimination is actually denying people opportunities and equal rights to things like jobs or promotions or financial assistance. There isn’t a big difference but there is some difference. According to Schaefer (2012),
• What are the causes of discrimination?
I believe that the number one cause of discrimination is ignorance. Ignorance is defined as the lack of knowledge and information. I belive that people that discriminate do so because they lack the information and knowledge that each and every person walking this earth no matter their race, creed, or religion is different. There are good and bad people of every form. If a person is raised and brought up around people that all have the same beliefs, that child grows into an adult and has the same views and the cycle continues. I also believe that prejudice and stereotyping are other causes of discrimination, because if their was no prejudice or stereotyping there wouldn’t be a need to discriminate. According to Schaefer (2012),
